Dumplings…Asian Style

Dumplings. Jiao zi. Wantons.

They are called by many names. But, whatever they are called, those little pockets of meat and vegetables found at many Chinese restaurants are simply delicious.

But did you know that there are more than just these “common” dumplings in the world?

Fortunately, Asian dumplings are not too difficult to make–especially now that Andrea Nguyen has written an entire cookbook detailing how to make them. From samosas to spring rolls, she covers it all. As I looked over the book, I found myself surprised at just how many varieties of Asian dumplings exist.

I recommend this book for Asian-food aficionados and those who would like to give another type of cuisine a try.

You’ve Heard of Heart-Healthy, But Have You Heard of Brain-Healthy

Remember those Cheerios boxes with the “Heart-Healthy” sticker on the front? As a kid, I loved that my Honey Nut Cheerios had a big red heart on the front. I knew that my heart was an important part of my body and that keeping it healthy was something that grown-ups loved, but I didn’t quite understand the link between a healthy mind and a healthy body.

Rebecca Katz does, though. That’s why she wrote a whole cookbook about keeping the brain healthy. The Healthy Mind now sits on my shelf at home. It claims to hold a treasure trove of “big-flavor recipes to enhance brain function, mood, memory, and mental clarity.” And it does. From Gingered Butternut Squash Soup with Walnut Cream to Shrimp-Stuffed Avocadoes, the recipes in this book look delectable.

Now, I am not a big seafood fan. That’s unfortunate, as many of the recipes in this book center on sea-drawn creatures. However, this does mean that people with easy access to seafood and people with a refined palate for shrimp and salmon will find plenty of new ideas for recipes in these pages.

I recommend this book for those who want something delicious to put on the table…and, of course, for those who want well-tuned minds.
